Preparing for Your Remote Online Notarization

Remote Online Notarization (RON) allows you to complete your notarized documents securely through a live online video session with a commissioned notary.

If you have never completed a RON before, the information below will help you feel prepared and confident.

What You Will Need

To successfully complete your RON session, please ensure you have:

• A valid, current government-issued photo ID
• A device with a working camera and microphone
• Stable internet connection
• A quiet location free from interruption

Temporary paper IDs are generally not accepted by RON platforms. Military IDs and IDs that cannot legally be copied or recorded cannot be used.

The name on your ID must properly match the name on your documents. If the names do not align, the session cannot proceed.

Identity Verification

Before signing, your identity must be verified through a secure, state-approved authentication process.

Standard Verification: Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA)

Most Remote Online Notarizations use Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA), which generates identity questions based on U.S. credit records.

You must:
• Have a U.S. Social Security Number or Personal TIN
• Have at least six (6) months of U.S. credit history

You will receive five questions and must answer at least four correctly.

Two attempts are allowed within 24 hours. If both attempts fail, you must wait 24 hours before trying again. This process cannot be overridden.

What Happens During the Session

You will appear live on camera with the notary
• Your ID will be verified through the platform
• Documents will be reviewed and signed electronically
• The session will be securely recorded as required by law

If technical issues occur, the session may need to be paused or rescheduled.

If You Are Located Outside the United States

You may still complete a RON session if your document relates to U.S. property or a matter governed by U.S. law.

Documents unrelated to the United States may not qualify.

Language Support

We prioritize clear communication.

When possible, we assign a commissioned notary who directly speaks or signs the language required.

If a bilingual notary is not available, additional coordination may be required.
